We saw the original RoboScooter in concept form a little while ago as essentially an MIT brainstorm/design excersize. Well it turns out the little electric folding device is going into production in 2009 with a little help from SYM. It would appear to be fairly true to the concept bike in that it looks like something from the future rather than some boring machine with some batteries thrown at it. Unfortunately... or not... the initial production version will not fold like a card table... which I don't have a huge issue with... putting a scooter in the back of the car seems to defeat the purpose of the device?
Basic specs seem to be that it will be a competitor for a conventional 50cc 4-stroke scooter with regard to power, top speed etc and range sounds like it will be just about useful. The group producing the RoboScooter are aiming to have it to market for under 2grand in US money, if they can do this you scooter people who want a bit of green in your life may ignore the lack of any storage whatsoever and just get one.

I beg to differ - putting a scooter in the back of a car *is* the purpose of device like this. Being powered by batteries it is sure to have a useful range of next to nothing and many commuters will find it too limited to actually get to where they are going and back. But if it folded, they might find it useful to supplement their car - drive from the suburbs to somewhere closer to the city but far enough to find free unlimited parking, then complete their trip on this contraption.
