Hybrid MP3 |
Piaggio is planning to sell a plug-in hybrid version of its MP3 in Europe later this year and in the United States early 2010. Piaggio says the U.S. verison of the three-wheel scooter will travel several miles on battery power alone, while the European version which is all-electric will do about 12 miles. Piaggio believe the U.S. model maybe able to get up to 141 miles per gallon overall, which would make it one of the most fuel efficient vehicles ever made. We at TheScooterReview.com will be one of the first to test this claim in the real world! According to our 'real-world' testing the current MP3 400ie does 0-60mph in 13.10 sec and uses 45mpg and the less powerful MP3 250cc does the 0-60 dash in 17.50 sec and boasts 56 mpg. Piaggio are claiming that their new parallel hybrid design combing a 125cc engine and an electric motor should be capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in about 5 seconds. Interesting! So Piaggio are going to produce a hybrid design thats as fast as Gilera GP800. Therefore the 125cc plus electric engine is going to produce at least 75 HP properly more, due to the extra weight of all the electrics/batteries etc. To put it perspective Piaggio's MP3 400 weighs 244kg and produces 34hp. This is we have see! It can be charged from a standard electrical outlet, and uses a combination of regenerative braking and several adjustable hybrid modes to charge the battery on the move. The U.S. model is expect to cost $8,000-$9,000 when it hits showrooms next year, about the same price as the MP3 400ie.
