Just a question... Is JogR similar to JogCV? The latter isn't available in Finland, where I live. It also costs way more.

Having owned only Yamaha Jog's (CY50,CV50), I can agree the performance is exceptional. BUT rider comfort SUCKS!!!
How about a adjustable suspension, or even non adjustable but softer ride.
I often use it to cruise around the country so having a decent ride is mandatory.
Also, going to work in in sub C° temps is a true nightmare!
How about optional grip covers, or heated grips and a micro fairing for my legs.
And while your at it Yamaha, upgrade the headlight to something better than the pathetic flashlight thats on there now.

I bought a Yamaha 2005 50cc Jog off trademe as a result of this review & found the brakes are much better than my old Suzuki SJ50. I went for a ride with my mate who has a derestricted (washer only removed) Aprilia SR50 & he had a ride of my bike the Aprilia has a better top end but the Jog stays with it on accelleration & hills. I have deresrticted exhaust & CDI which slows acceleration slightly but better top speed. The Aprilia is injected water cooled and is very good on fuel.

Niki... I don't doubt that you will absolutely love the mighty VMoto Milan... great bike.

Jimbo... The Urban R4 is a nice bike... the review might have sounded a bit negative but to be absolutely fair, overall it is a good, solid bike... I believe they are now selling an updated version too. Take one for a ride, especially if you are a bigger person you should love it... not quite as peppy as some of the smaller bodied 50's but good top speed is very useful. Not a bad machine by any means!

Thank you Thank you Thank you! Fantastically helpful review. I'm looking to buy a first scooter as a 50th birthday present to myself and have been struggling to decide what would be best. I want a Vespa but think I need a Vmoto.
Cheers Niki.

We haven't put a Tomos to the test yet so can't really be certain how one would compare.

It is called a Nitro so...it could explode!!!

Seriously I'm not very familiar with the brand, they certainly aren't one of the larger companies. Not that that should make it a bad model. It's always a concern however when it comes to servicing and parts availability when buying less well known brands.

Hopefully we'll test one soon and get the run down.

I am wondering how the Tomos Nitro 50cc fits in with these. Is it comparable to any of the reviewed scooters?

Ai... Thanks heaps, glad you liked it and we appreciate the info. Will have a reviewer in the States ASAP to nail down some of those models we can't access here.

Kaza... We generally list NZ prices in the full reviews. I think they are all up now except the Vino (my bad) basically they fall into 3 camps though. Inexpensive so 2grand or under sort of range which would be the Lifan, Jog, Suzuki, Honda and the Adly. Then you have the midrange stuff which hovers between the 2 and 3 thousand dollar mark in there you find the Vmoto, Keeway, Urban, PGO, Zip and Vino. then you have the two vespas which are in the over 3grand sort of range... hope that helped

World class review, guys!

BTW, the Honda CREA Scoopy/Metropolitan/Jazz is a much different machine than the Honda Today: made in Japan not China, cast aluminum frame (like the Goldwing and CBR motorbikes) not welded mild steel tube, high compression liquid cooled engine not medium compression air cooled, much different styling.

The Today is a fine scoot; the Scoopy is a better - and more expensive - machine.

125cc Comparison test is a fair way off.

Likely to be September/October...we'll post the date as soon as it's confirmed.

My choice for a 125cc bike is DEFINITELY the Suzuki Address if you can get your hands on one...

The PMX we tested still ran some sort of restriction so it's acceleration was not as quick as it could have been. Your bike is probably completely de-restricted. We also test the bikes to 50kph via GPS as the speedometers are rather inaccurate. You'll likely find the PMX hits 50kph in about 10 seconds when fully de-restricted. Rider weight has a large effect on the time as well. The PMX may not have won the test but it's still a great bike. It's great on the road where it counts the most.

Great work hollywood this is the first really good 50cc comparo i've found on the net. I've just bought a bolwell pmx50, so was initially a bit put out to see it ranked so low. I actually reckon it looks pretty cool, although my Australian model has a different blue and white paint job, and the alloy handlebars are not hidden behind the weird little piece of plastic that your test bike had. What really got my attention though were the acceleration to 50km/h times. I read that your pmx took over 14 seconds to get there. That didn't sound quite right to me, so I conducted the same test today - and hit 50 in around nine seconds! My pmx has the same top speed as yours, but has a smoother tyre tread than the knobby looking ones on your test bike. Would this maybe account for the difference? I reckon you may have rated the pmx higher in your test if you'd ridden mine - I'm stoked with it! Anyway, congrats again on an excellent web site.

This comparison test was carried out in New Zealand. Some models are not available in the US. I believe Honda do not sell the Today in the US, they currently sell the Metropolitan which a very simular model.

Piaggio don't sell the Zip in the US either, they sell the Fly 50 which we haven't tested yet. I imagine if it's anything like the Fly 125 then it's likely a quality machine.

Future comparison tests will be in Australia, USA and Europe so we can get a better selection of bikes.

May be a stupid question, but I'm new to this (still looking at buying that first scooter): There's a couple models on the comparison that I'm not seeing on the manufacturer's sites (Pillagio Zip/Honda Today specifically) are these not available in the US? Am I looking in the wrong places? Any help is appreciated.

Great article. Want to see some others in the future if possible, Peugeot Blaster, TGB 101s etc...

Should have given points for actually being eligible to be registered as a moped. Only the little Honda and Vino would pass. Therefore they save $200 on reg a year, can be ridden on a car licence and don't have to have a WOF.

All the others have to be registered as motorcycles.

Brilliantly constructed MEGA 50cc COMPARISON TEST "SHOOTOUT".
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fascinating comparison test, just very professional, and thorough, with a worthy winner.
I'll be looking forward to seeing the premium exotic 50cc's battle it out in the future.
Sure makes me really appreciate my 2006 Piaggio NRG PureJet.

Great review! too late for me, I already bought the KYMCO ZX50... I test rode the Suzuki, the Yamaha, the Honda, the Adly, the Hyosung, and a TGB 101S before deciding on the KYMCO (Sold as "Bug Vibe" here in NZ)...

The 4 year warranty was the clincher and the look and size of the thing...

The TGB was in a similar league as far as performance is concerned... the KYMCO and the TGB will both do 75kph on a flat with me riding (I weigh 100kg)...

I know what you mean about the Honda, in my little test ride I was very impressed the handling was fantastic... but wheels small and speed non-existent.

If you need a KYMCO ZX50 to try out, I can lend you mine to review etc... seeing as you said the dealer wasn't keen to loan you guys one.
